Rock Drilling for Geothermal Energy: Equipment and Spare Parts

Geothermal energy is a growing renewable energy source that requires deep rock drilling for exploration and production wells. The drilling conditions are among the most challenging in the industry.

Geothermal Drilling Challenges

Geothermal drilling faces unique challenges: high temperatures (up to 300°C+), corrosive fluids, hard and abrasive rock, and very deep holes (often 2,000-5,000 meters). These conditions demand the highest quality equipment and materials.

Equipment Used

Geothermal wells are typically drilled with rotary drilling rigs using PDC or tricone bits. DTH hammers are used for harder formations. The equipment must be rated for high-temperature operation.

High-Temperature Seals

Standard hydraulic seals are not suitable for high-temperature geothermal applications. Specialized high-temperature seal materials (FKM/Viton, PTFE) are required to maintain seal integrity at elevated temperatures.
