Rock Drill Drifter Lubrication System: Setup and Maintenance
The drifter lubrication system delivers oil mist to the percussion mechanism, protecting the piston, cylinder, and valve from metal-to-metal contact. It is one of the most critical systems in the rock drill.
How It Works
The lubrication system injects a small amount of oil into the percussion air or hydraulic circuit. This oil mist coats all internal surfaces, providing a protective film that prevents direct metal contact.
Lubricator Setup
Set the lubricator flow rate according to the manufacturer's specification. Too little oil causes dry running and rapid wear. Too much oil can contaminate the flushing water and cause environmental issues.
Oil Selection
Use the manufacturer-recommended lubricator oil. This is typically a light mineral oil with specific additives for rock drill applications. Do not substitute with general-purpose oils.
Daily Checks
Check the lubricator oil level at every shift. Verify that oil is flowing by observing the sight glass or checking for oil mist at the drill exhaust. A dry lubricator is an emergency — stop drilling immediately.
Lubricator Maintenance
Clean the lubricator reservoir and check valve regularly. Replace the lubricator if it fails to maintain correct flow rate. Nova Rock Drill supplies lubricators and lubricator oil for all major rock drill brands.
